Funds awarded to the PREHCO Project by the Puerto Rico Legislature. San Juan, Puerto Rico

The "Comisión Especial Conjunta sobre Donativos Legislativos" awarded a $30,000 donation to the project. Funds will be used to produce a report to be distributed to policy makers and governmental agencies.

Dr. Hodes visited the Medical Sciences Campus and the PREHCO Project facilities. The NIA Director discussed with Drs. Melba Sánchez-Ayéndez and Ana Luisa Dávila the progress and details of the project.

A one day enumerators training was offered on October 29th, 2002 by the
Puerto Rico Project staff.

Dr. Mattei presented "La Población de Puerto Rico: Características Demográficas Generales según el Censo de Población del Año 2000" and Alberto García presented "El uso de los resultados del Censo del 2000 para el estudio del envejecimiento de la población en Puerto Rico: la experiencia del Proyecto PREHCO" in the PRSA meeting held in Chicago, IL.

A new interviewers training was conducted on September 20-23 at the
Club de la Facultad in the Pharmacy Building of the Medical Sciences
Campus. Puerto Rico staff offered the training to 34 interviewers.

A one day enumerators training was offered by the Puerto Rico
Project staff. August 19th.
New funds awarded to the PREHCO Project by the Puerto Rico
Legislature. August 2002
The "Comisión Especial Conjunta sobre Donativos Legislativos" renewed
the $25,000 donation to the project. Funds were used to reinforce the
sample strategy and the fieldwork.
First Interviewers Training. San Juan, Puerto Rico.
May 2001

The first interviewers training was carried out from May 17th to the
19th at the Club de la Facultad in the Pharmacy Building of the Medical
Sciences Campus. Project staff from Madison and Puerto Rico trained 32
interviewers. The supervisors training was held from May 20th to May
22nd.

The PREHCO Project was presented in the "Primera Conferencia Internacional de Salud Pública", organized by the Graduate School of Public Health of the University of Puerto Rico. As part of the panel on aging, Dr. Sánchez, Dr. Mattei, María Larriuz, Dr. Dávila and Dr. Fernández presented four project topics: "The PREHCO Project", "The elderly population in Puerto Rico: results from the 2000 Census", "The use of GIS and GPS technologies in the enumeration of the PREHCO Project sample", "Validation of a test to evaluate the cognitive impairment of elderly Puerto Ricans", and "The experience of the PREHCO Project pilot test".

Moving to the new PREHCO facilities.
December 2001
The PREHCO Project moved to its new facilities at the Biomedical
Studies Center 1. The offices are located on the second floor of the
building.
Meeting with UW Survey Center staff. San Juan, Puerto Rico.
October 2001
John Stevenson, Theresa Thompson and Brendan Day, from the UW
Survey Center visited San Juan to meet the staff in Puerto Rico in
order to discuss programming issues, fieldwork strategy, training
agenda and project timeline.
Funds awarded to the PREHCO Project by the Puerto Rico Legislature
The "Comisión Especial Conjunta sobre Donativos Legislativos"
awarded $25,000 to the project. Funds were used to increase the sample
size.

Project's Consultants
A meeting was held with the project consultants to discuss final tunings to the questionnaire and the project agenda. All the project consultants attended: Dr. Gerda Fillenbaum, Dr. Robert Wallace, Dr. Kiriakos Markides, Dr. Axel Feller, Dr. Suzanna Waters-Castillo, Dr. Walter Rosich, Dr. Carlos Cabán, Dr. Hernando Mattei, Dr. Esther María León and Dr. Kathryn Terrazas.

The project was presented to researchers, administrators, policy makers
and the press. Hon. Velda González, Vice-president of the Puerto Rico
Senate, Dr. José R. Carlo, Chancellor of the Medical Sciences Campus,
and Dr. Alberto Palloni, Principal Investigator, addressed the
importance of the project. Dr. Carlos Cabán and Dr. Sánchez presented
the validation of the minimental test for elderly Puerto Ricans
preliminary results.
SABE Project Meeting. Madison, Wisconsin.
April 2001

Members of the PREHCO Project in Puerto Rico visited Madison to attend a meeting of the SABE Project. Researchers from all the seven countries of the SABE Project, experts from Canada and the United Nations Organization presented their suggestions for the analysis of different topics covered by the SABE survey. Some of the PREHCO consultants, also SABE consultants, attented and discussed the alternatives.
